Terroir (vineyard) is a term used to refer to the land where grape is grown and the material to make wine. Terroir is crucial to wine quality and is clearly labeled on the label. Based on terroir one can identify the grape (cépage) of the wine grape as well as other factors affecting wine quality. The larger grape growing unit terroir is vignoble (grape growing area). A vignoble can consist of many different terroir with different grape and wine quality. There are 14 major vignobles in France, the largest of which is the Languedoc grape growing region in southwestern France. In addition, France has some smaller grape growing areas in Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Alsace, Lyon, Bugey, Lorraine and Île-de-France … which are the lands producing world famous wines.Let’s explore grape raw material areas and partners of EUconsumer:

1.Bordeaux

As the capital of the world wine industry, the southwestern port city of France – Bordeaux owns many famous wine villages such as Pessac-Léognan, Entre-Deux-Mers, Sauternes and Barsac. Bordeaux’s history of wine production dates back to the middle of the 1st century but it was not until the middle of the 12th century under King Henry II that Bordeaux was truly known. Bordeaux is home to famous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Bordeaux is often strong, harsh and can be aged longer than other wines, therefore, Bordeaux is considered the “picky” wine people enjoy the most.

2. Champagne

Since the 17th century, Champagne has become the center of the famous French wine production when the monk Dom Pierre Pérignon invented the unique sparkling wine processing technique. Champagne is made from 3 main grapes: Pinot noir red, Pinot meunier black and Chardonnay white. Each grape is specially trimmed to create the best quality. Today, the northern cold country of France is home to the world’s famous effervescent wine production. Although the region’s climate is not particularly favorable for the strong grape varieties, the valley along the Loire river is still the place for “producing” the most diverse wines in France with the main grape varieties Muscadet, Cabernet Franc. and Chenin Blanc.
